about Us

Ogres-Holm Pottery and Friends in Service Helping have partnered together, to form a dedicated planning committee for the annual Empty Bowls event in December for Carson City, NV. Throughout the year, the committee invites the community to participate in our Bowl Making Nights. Each year, we set our goal to create 1,000 bowls to be donated to the main event for purchase. The proceeds from this event will be contributed to Friends in Helping Service (F.I.S.H.) food programs.

But what is Empty Bowls, you may wonder? It is a nationwide project, uniquely tailored to each hosting community. Originating in 1990 from the vision of an art teacher and his wife, Empty Bowls is a grassroots initiative aimed at raising funds for food-related programs to combat food insecurity. This project started with students crafting ceramic bowls, followed by an inclusive soup lunch for students and faculty. During this lunch serve food in a disposable container rather than these handmade bowls. We do this for a simple but meaningful reason. The ceramic bowls made for Empty Bowls serve as an important reminder, your neighbor or someone you know may be facing food insecurities within our community.
